Gift giving is a true art. You need to know their style; you need to buy something that they would most likely buy on their own. It is not much different when it comes to gifting jewelry. Whatever the occasion, gifting jewelry requires prior careful thought and consideration. You may find a
jewelry set at 50% off at the mall but is it something they would buy on their own? Is it something that fits? Below, are a few things you need to take into consideration when gifting someone jewelry:
TASTES, PREFERENCES & FASHION STYLE
You need to be aware of the kind of taste and style they like. Are they into simple and light jewelry? Are they into layered and long jewelry? Observe the kind of jewelry they wear. What pieces have you seen them wear before? Additionally, look at their clothing style, is there a jewelry piece or design that you could purchase to complement their fashion?
TYPE OF JEWELRY
This goes hand-in-hand with the person’s preferences. Do they like rocking earrings more than bangles? Do they purchase more studs than long earrings? When you begin to observe what they tend to purchase more or prefer, it should give you a clue on what they like more. In a case though, where you intend to gift them a ring consider these: you need to know their ring size or purchase an adjustable type of ring that if it doesn’t fit it could be adjusted. Now, if you could avoid the latter the better, unless they are into adjustable rings. Though, who doesn’t like fitting jewelry?
Go for: chain neckpiece with pendant, choker, collar necklace, bracelet, hair and head ornaments – circlet, earrings, hairpin, brooch. N.B: go for rings if you know their size*
ALL-OCCASION JEWELRY
While we are still on the subject of the type of jewelry, you could choose to gift them jewelry that is unique and stands out, yet can be worn on different occasions. It could make that simple outing dress look stylish and still yet maintain the office wear to remain formal and classy.
Go for: simple chain neckpiece with pendant, bracelet, stud earrings, short hook earrings, hairpin, brooch, rings*
MATERIAL JEWELRY
The jewelry material matters too. You need to consider the material’s durability, material’s workability/ malleability, material’s maintenance among other properties. One ideal material that you can consider is brass. Over the period of time as Brassed Crafts, we have experimented with
the brass material and continue to fall in love more because of its pros/strength. Brass lasts for a long period with proper care and maintenance, does not rust, it can be hammered into many shapes without cracking, it can be integrated with bone/gemstone/shells/beads, it can be
maintained by polishing.
Go for: pure brass, pure brass integrated with other materials such as bone/gemstone/shells/beads.
QUALITY VS QUANTITY
Quality over quantity any day especially when you are on a budget or low on money (a tip, aye!). You need to offer them that positive experience that they can always look back to and keep. There is a joy we all feel when we receive a gift, especially if we consider it a good/right gift for us. Go for quantity if you can maintain the high quality of them. Quality is gauged by standard and not how much it costs. Is the type of jewelry durable? Does it chip off easily or not? Is it proportional?
Go for: quality before quantity.
BONUS: Consider the whole package; pick out a design that fits their style, have it in a package (don’t just hand it over), add a note or card. You can even choose to get a custom-made jewelry piece and have it engraved. Create an experience with the gift. People tend to cherish the thoughtfulness behind the gift.
