“Over the years the limited jewelry forms of prehistoric times multiplied until they included ornaments for every part of the body. For the head there were crowns, diadems, tiaras, hairpins, combs, earrings, nose rings, lip rings and earplugs. For the neck and torso there were necklaces, fibulae (the ancient safety pin), brooches, pectorals (breastplates), stomachers, belts, and watch fobs. For the arms and hands armlets, bracelets and rings were fashioned. For the thighs, legs and feet craftsmen designed thigh bracelets, ankle bracelets, toe rings and shoe buckles.” (https://www.britannica.com/art/jewelry)
Each piece of jewelry has a different function from the other. Some of these functions are:
1.To add some edginess to your outfits. Even as you look to have some edginess, coordinate your jewelry to complement your outfit. e.g. This could be done by:
(i) Wearing a statement piece or add a pop of colour to your jewelry with plain coloured outfits. Shop: Crystal Neckpiece, Ufalme Neckpiece, Staff Earrings, Jiwe Bracelet.
(ii) Wearing pure brass jewelry with printed outfits. Shop: Rembo Earrings, Afreeka Earrings, Pambo Stud, Gongo Bracelet.
2.To style your hair. e.g. Hair spirals are found from eras of ancient cultures like in the Near East of Mesopotamia and in the Greek cultures of Aegean. Although these cultures both have rich narrative and mythology, these simple hair ring shapes are a reoccurring form that has been found. From the earliest eras it has been found in, it is seen as a simple round wire spiral with blunt or rounded ends. This spring like shape would be twisted into the hair to add a decorative element. Other hair accessories are the hair cuffs to hold hair in place.
Shop: Hair Accessories
3.To highlight features of the body e.g. face. If you intend to draw attention to your face or head, take into account the type of jewelry that will bring out your features. You could pick statement brass earrings with added coloured bead/stone to draw attention to your face or a brass tiara with glittery stone to draw attention to your head.
Shop: Binti Earrings, Chungu Stud, Milele Bracelet Ring, Rod Ring
4.To fix clothing in place or add detail to your clothing. e.g. cuff links, hatpin, belt buckle, brooch.
5.Cultural/modern symbolism. Traditionally and currently, people get jewelry to represent something significant in their lives. e.g. in Maasai traditional culture, ‘Surutia’ (large coiled brass pendants worn on the chest) are symbolic. During circumcision ceremony, a mother would lend her son the piece of jewelry to wear if the son is a chief warrior. The pendants generally represent a married woman has a circumcised son. She can also wear coiled wire on the upper arms to indicate that too.
Another example is, currently, people wear wedding rings to represent the union of a couple/identify them as a couple. Some of our rings can be used as engagement or promise ring to represent something significant in your life.
Shop: Brass Engagement Rings, Brass Wedding Bands, Custom Made Purity Rings, Custom Made Promise Rings.
“The functions of jewellery throughout the eras have dealt with the common human desires for beauty, power, personal connection, superstitious, protection, tradition, trade of wealth, utilitarian function and for art.” (Chayle Cook, 2017)
