Hey there, how’s the going? Enjoying the process? Are you being present? We sure hope you are.
Now now, today we’ll be discussing THE DRESS! This is probably one of the things a girl thinks about and visualizes long before finding the special someone. I mean you probably already have a Pinterest board with ideas right? The most fascinating thing however is how indecisive this wedding season could get you. Well, some brides are clear on exactly what they want and don’t change, but a good number have a little bit of a back and forth settling for what they’d like. The more you see pictures and fit gowns, the more your ideas change, and that’s totally normal. Don’t be hard on yourself sis, it happens. You may want a mermaid dress today and a ball gown tomorrow, that is all part of the process.
A few things we hope help you though;
God wants you to look good! Yes sis, you read that right. God is interested in how you look on your wedding day as much as you are, actually even more that you ever will imagine. It would save you some good time to consult Him. He is all knowing friend, trust me He knows fashion more than you do and is creative on levels unexplored. Take time to sit with Him and know His heart concerning your dress, let it be one that honors Him too. He is able and more than willing to help you get the very best. Remember, He is a Dad, He will definitely pick out the best for His girl on her big day. Besides, He saw this season long before you were born.
You, my friend, are gonna be the one wearing this dress, you wanna make sure you love it. The truth is, you’re gonna have a lot of people share their ideas of what they think works best for you. Some of these people will be well meaning and genuine, some not so much. Some may not even realize their comments are getting to you sis. When all is said and done, choose your dress. In love and wisdom hear what people have to say but ask God for His counsel. As much as possible, ensure your dress is not too far from your comfort zone and personal style. What do I mean? If you’re naturally a reserved girl and wouldn’t naturally consider a strapless dress, you may want to avoid it even on your wedding day. It is very likely that you find yourself adjusting the dress all day long, wishing you had sleeves or at the very least some straps, but that ship will be long gone at that point. Make sure you love your dress is what we’re saying.
There’s nothing wrong with trying out different designs. You might find that you love how a mermaid dress looks on you than a ball gown even if this is what you’d always envisioned. You really don’t want to wear a dress and wish you’d tried something else. This does not mean that you take so much time trying dresses from every shop you can find, no. One of each design you’re considering is good enough. Take photos (if its okay with the bridal shop you visit) and look at them when you’re settled.
Maybe you’re the bride considering a custom-made wedding dress, that’s absolutely okay. Now, this is a decision that needs you to make some very important considerations. Before anything else, do your due diligence concerning the tailor or designer you wanna work with. As much as you can, get their work and even a recommendation from someone who’s worked with the said tailor or designer. Now Instagram is good, but this cannot be the only platform you’re using to choose a tailor sis. Once again, engage the Holy Spirit here, He’s able to help you know who to work with. Once that is done, make sure you start your process well in advance, at least 3 months to your wedding day is a good idea. Remember life is still going on and our bodies especially as women change so consider having an allowance on your dress just in case an adjustment is needed.
Something else that goes untouched a lot is your undergarments. What you’re wearing under your dress can make or break your look. A perfect dress with the wrong undergarments is already messed up. Invest in good quality bra and underwear for your wedding dress especially if you’re gonna go with a mermaid dress, a dress with a low back or even a strapless dress.
For the bride who’s considering renting their dress, you’re first of all in the right place (shameless plug right here). Now, you really wanna make sure you know and understand the terms and conditions given to you, read that contract and ask questions. Remember you are gonna be spending a significant amount of money for this dress, you wanna get value for that money.
Last but not least, consider your body type. Sis, you might have seen the perfect dress on Pinterest, but the woman in the dress may not be the same body type as you. It’s gonna feel so good wearing a dress that so perfectly complements your body type. Remember it is the dress that is meant to follow the body of the woman and not vice versa. Understand and embrace your body, ask for help where you need to then make the best decision with these in mind. Engage a personal stylist if need be (another shameless plug) but make sure you not only look good but feel good too.
All this to say, enjoy wearing your dress! You’re gonna have it on for a significant number of hours, and it’s gonna be in your memories for a lifetime.
Love,
Adhama.
