A letter to Her – International Women’s Day

Hey Gorgeous,

I was gonna go with, ‘I hope this finds you well’ but you’ve probably received one or 5 of those already so let me save you the extras.

How are you? Really? How’s the going? How’s your heart and mind? Have you drank your water today?

I know you’ve probably not answered these questions objectively and intentionally for a while coz we are always out here saying ‘I’m fine’. I also know sometimes you’ve had a genuine smile and laughter but some days have been tough. Maybe nobody gets to see that side because, well, we have to look put together. I know that too well coz I’ve had to be that some days, but let’s chat a little. Lemme remind you of a few things. Yes, you can grab your tea or coffee.

Girl, I celebrate you today. Yes, you!

You are a strong and beautiful masterpiece. God’s magnificent work of art, even on your low days. You are worthy of love and care too. When was the last time you rested? You know, like really put everything down and just rested? I know the world we live in has glorified busyness and you probably wonder if you have done enough to deserve rest. Then there are these little monsters called bills that you probably look at and wonder when it’ll be morning again so that you get off bed and run. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do they say.

Sis, I celebrate your resilience and hard work, but I also celebrate you, simply who you are. It’s not always in what you do or don’t do. Being a woman is being strong and bold and all that but it’s also being warm, nurturing and beautifully vulnerable.

God did a perfect job with you. I mean have you had a glance at the mirror? Actually, make it a long stare. See how beautifully every part of your body comes together to form the spectacle you are. You are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God, the King. You are fiercely loved already, jealously guarded and clearly seen by God. Before you do anything at all, He already smiles at you. You just stepping out of bed and being who He made you do be already gives Him glory.

I know I’m gonna need to go back and read this to myself too, but promise me you’ll rest. Believe me you are already light, it won’t take much to shine.

Breathe, laugh a little, smell the flowers. You are doing the most and that’s beautiful, but don’t you think you need that beauty sleep too?

Happy International Women’s Day!

You are a gem and I celebrate you.

See you next time you take a trip to our wardrobe eey?

Love,

Wangechi Wachira,

Adhama.
